Apple Pulls iOS Beta Update For Boot Looping – But Why?
Apple have recently pulled iOS 17.3 beta 2 after users discovered that the update was causing a boot loop, and that the issue was occurring from the iPhone 12 series up to the current iPhone 15 series with the ‘Back Tap’ feature enabled.
The ‘Back Tap‘ feature was an accessibility option provided from iOS 14, which can be enabled by going to Settings > Accessibility > Touch and selecting the ‘Back Tap’ option. This option allows a double or triple tap from the back of the phone to trigger an action set up with ‘Back Tap’, such as acting like the home button or side buttons or quickly opening the Control Centre.
What is a ‘boot loop’?
A ‘boot loop’ is when a device continually restarts during its startup process, due to a problem within the process causing the process to repeat.
For Apple devices, such as iPhones, iPads and Macbooks, a boot loop would instead be displayed as the Apple logo during the startup process. This would repeat until the device has run out of battery life.
Can anything be done to fix this?
Apple have been made aware of this and have pulled this revision of iOS 17.3 beta, so it is no longer available to install. Fortunately this issue can be fixed by going back to a previous iOS version, such as iOS 17.3, and restoring any previous data from a backup made on the device.
It is important to note that, as this current iOS 17.3 version is a beta update, it can be unstable due to untested bugs, so it is important to take extreme caution and to keep backup data of the iPhone from before the update was installed.
